Top 10 Movies Of 1970's

TOP 10 MOVIES OF 1970's

Yes, so we are finally here, talking about my favourite decade in history of cinema's TOP 10 films. This was a tough one, but in a way easy as well. Most of my favourite films are from 1970's, but I explored some new and underrated films as well for the 70's and found some GREAT one's. Anyway, you will find them in the honourable mentions, without wasting any time LETS START!

10. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom

The most disturbing film ever? YES! This is a film which is not for everyone, it is one of those that you would like to watch only once. This is also one of the most controversial films of all time! This film is a necessary evil, it full of rage and sadness, it is like the evil brother of SCHINDLER’S LIST, no truly this film is not easy to watch, ROGER EBERT owned the film, but never watched it. Also, it is an must watch for aspiring filmmakers, it is very artistic. Just give this movie a try, it is not the movie I  love,  but I cannot deny the fact, it is an big accomplishment. Also, did you know the director of the film (Pier Paolo Pasolini) was murdered shortly before the release of it :/.

9. THE ASCENT

One of the best film from SOVIET UNION, Infact the best SOVIET UNION movie not directed by ANDREI TARKOVSKY ;), I believe. This movie is just brilliant, it had no GREAT actors, amateur’s mostly, but did that affected the film? Absolutely not! They were so GREAT in the film. This is one of the most artistic film, I’ve ever seen.  Also, this is directed by a women, which is a big achievement within itself. The plot of the film couldn’t be much simpler. This is one of the most underrated film, and this one, I mean it, very few people have seen this, but what is a great pleasure about it is that, it is available to watch for free here. This film, is the one, which you should not miss, It is so emotional, and it has a heart for it’s characters.

8. NETWORK

Sidney Lumet is a genius, he has crafted some of the best films, and my favourites. NETWORK is my favourite LUMET film of all time, Yes I know he did another masterpiece 12 ANGRY MEN, he has many others as well. But NETWORK, is a film that tells the truth about the T.V people to what extent they can go just for their profits. This is a movie, that I can have a good time with. It could make you laugh, and even can get you serious at times. This is a very well character study, like LUMET does, even in his 12 ANGRY MEN, we just saw HENRY FONDA’s character at one place only for 1 ½ hour, but we learned so much about him. NETWORK Is a film which was way ahead of it’s time. PETER FINCH gives a ground-breaking performance, sad it turned out to be his last year, but he was rewarded with the OSCAR which he deserved every bit of. 1976 was a brilliant year for films, we had so many GREAT’s and NETWORK was the second best that year for me, hold on, don’t’ scroll at the top, you would know what is no.1 in no time ;). NETWORK is a movie, I can never get tired off.

7. LE CERCLE ROUGE

The best heist movie? Arguably YES! Tough best foreign HEIST movie by far. JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE was a genius and one of the greatest filmmaker’s ever lived. He was master at making CRIME films which is my personal favourite genre. He can tell us a lot with saying anything. He uses silence like no other director does, this is not his best film but yeah in top 5 for sure! Scene after scene, it just got GREATER & GREATER. A perfect film-noir, this film is a CLASSIC!

6. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

One of STANLEY KUBRICK’s ultimate best, it is easily in his top 3 for me. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, is different from any other KUBRICK movie, well his all films are different tough :P. This movie is violent, disturbing and may not be for everyone, but it’s KUBRICK ;). This movie was way ahead of it’s time, such brilliance in the early. This film has a hidden element to it, which I won’t spoil, very few people find it. This was one of the very first movies of KUBRICK’s that I watched, and it has a special place in my heart ever since. This film has one of the best use of narration I have ever seen. STANLEY KUBRICK’s other work, BARRY LYNDON is superb but this is even better. It has mixed two very different genre’s and my favourite’s, SC-FI & CRIME, which is an interesting thing itself.

5. MIRROR

Andrei Tarkovsky created some of the best works of 1970’s right from SOLARIS to STALKER. But it was his MIRROR that managed to be on the list. I love all three movies of almost equally, but MIRROR really has something special in it. This movie is roughly autobiographical, this is one of the most unique film I have ever seen. TARKOVSKY adds poetic element to it, which is even more brilliant. This is film, which requires multiple viewings, to appreciate it fully. ANDREI TARKOVSKY was one of the greatest filmmaker of all time, and this is his best. It has nonlinear style of storytelling, which I am always a fan of. It is full of dreams and flashbacks. This is like a TERRANCE MALICK film, the poetic element in the movie is so clear and very well executed. All, I could say is this, everybody may not like this film, because of it’s structure maybe, but for me as well as a lot of other people, this movie is one heck of filmmaking. Hats off to Mr. ANDREI TARKOVSKY.

4. CHINATOWN

Best NEO-NOIR film of all time? HELL YEAH! This movie is so perfect I cannot express it in words, such a beautiful film. This film’s screenplay has been called the best screenplay ever written, I would say that is arguably true. This is what I would call it GREAT WRITING + GREAT TWIST + GREAT PERFORMANCES + TOP-NOTCH DIRECTION = A MASTERPIECE + ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES EVER MADE. No, really this film has one of the twists of all time, ROMAN POLANSKI did a fantastic job creating this masterpiece. This movie is one my favourite movies of all time, such a perfect, marvelous film. And how I can forget the epic and one of the best closing lines ever, “Jake Leave It, It’s Chinatown”.

3. APOCALYPSE NOW

The best war film ever made, by far in my opinion. This movie is also a masterpiece by FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, this is also known as arguably his best work, tough I think it is third, :P wait till the top of the list ;). Right from first scene, We see trees, then a brilliant piece of music starts, THIS THE END….OH MY ONLY FRIEND..THE END! That is one of favourite songs used in movies of all time. This is MARTIN SHEEN’s best performance by far. No, it dosen’t have war action sequences like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, not it has poetic elements of the great THE THIN RED LINE( which is the second best war film according to me ). But APOCALYPSE NOW is one of the strongest film I have ever seen. This is one of the darkest war film of all time. This movie is top-notch, weather by performances or writing or direction, ROBERT DUVALL is mind blowing in the film as well as legendry MARLON BRANDO. This film went with a lot of delays and problems but the result was worth it, it went on winning PALM D’OR AWARDS at CANNES, I still wonder how the hell KRAMER VS KRAMER won BEST PICTURE at OSCARS, that year , this movie deserved every bit of it. Nonetheless, this movie is one of my favourite of all time, like in TOP 10 itself.

2. TAXI DRIVER

A movie that changed my life and it is the reason I’m writing this today, I owe it all to this MASTERPIECE, this is the movie after watching  I said I want to be filmmaker. You can read about it here, I have already done the explanation about the movie that changed my life. MARTIN SCORSESE’s other masterpiece of 1970 was MEAN STREETS was brilliant, but out of nowhere, PAUL SCHADER wrote this marvelous screenplay with inspiration from his own life, and they found the perfect director for it Mr. MARTIN SCORSESE. This is my favourite character study of all time, also this is my no.2 favourite film of all time. This movie has dark humour, it has violent action, it has one of the best screenplay, and it has one of the greatest performance of all time by ROBERT DI NIRO, he completely became TRAVIS BICKLE.  This is a perfect neo-noir film, I have watched this movie 8-10 times, and I am still ready to take another viewing. This is a movie which requires multiple viewings, and also I think this is SCORSESE’s best work, YES I know he had gone making more masterpieces but for me, this stays his best. I cannot express it in words how much I love this film.

1. THE GODFATHER & THE GODFATHER PART II

What else could have topped the list, my favourite movie of all time. Yes, It had to be this way, both parts at the first place, tough I give slight edge to first one but second one has even darker tone, and it has told two different stories of YOUNG VITO CORLEONE which is played marvelously by ROBERT DI NIRO & MICHAEL CORLEONE which is also played brilliantly by AL PACINO. But my favourite performance in the movie comes from the GREAT MARLON BRANDO. These films have one of the best screenplay’s of all time.  FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, he was a genius and he proved it with these and other two masterpieces in the 70’s, there is no doubt he was the best director of 70’s. This film was called the best film since CITIZEN KANE, and is still called one of the greatest of all time. This is what I would call perfect films. This is the greatest movie in my opinion I have seen a lot of film in the last 4 years, but none could top these masterpieces. This movie re revolutionized the whole movie industry.  What else could I say!

AE DIL HAI MUSKHIL (2016) MOVIE REVIEW

AE DIL HAI MUSKHIL (2016) MOVIE REVIEW

Karan Johar is a talented director, tough I end up only ”LIKING” his films. Exciteness of me for this film, was somewhere In the middle. This film has a cast of A grade actors, I am not a big fan of love-stories of bollywood, but yeah, some them turn out to be decent. With this film I stand somewhere in between, it’s not GREAT, nor it is awful.

The plot of the film revolves around, A story about unrequited love. The journey of three characters Ayan, Alizeh & Saba. It is sort of a love triangle film.

This film is quite similar to ROCKSTAR (2011) in many ways, also to some other previous KARAN JOHAR films. A major issue I found with the movie is it’s pace, which was quite slow at times. What is different in the film? Not really much nothing, a typical bollywood movie in certain ways. But, even tough it didn’t had a lot of new elements, we got to see a new KARAN JOHAR film, which is a good one, unlike the unrealstic movie of his STUDENT OF THE YEAR, which was great but had to many flaws. This is far from being his worst film, but not even close to his best.

It has some of the best looking shots of bollywood in 2016. Gorgeous cinematography. SONGS as most of you are already brilliant. Screenplay of the film was decent too, there are some quotable dialogues in it. KARAN JOHAR’s direction is not up to the mark on this one, he creates feeling for his character pretty well, but in this one, he failed to create a feeling to such an extent, that you feel the emotions. And, again the pacing.

Performances: This had some of the best working actors/actresses working today. All of them gave brilliant performances, there is no doubt the acting, they all were fabulous. RANBIR KAPOOR, who was on bad days, as his films didn’t worked well, but I still think TAMASHA was brilliant and to some extent BOMBAY VELVET (It’s ANURAG KASHYAP man :P). Ranbir Kapoor gives his best performance since BARFI (2012), the movie which I didn’t like and found it to be overrated, but cannot deny the fact his acting was brilliant in that as well. The both actresses of the film (ANUSHKA SHARMA & ASHWARIYA RAI BACHAN) were good, but overacted at times. SHAH RUKH KHAN, had an cameo, I didn’t think that was nessceary at all, but he did what he had, he shined even in the small ammount of time. And, how can I forget the controversial one FAWAD KHAN, I’m with INDIA, but he did justice to his role. Tough no offence, wouldn’t like to see him any other INDIAN film now :P.

Overall, this film had the potential to be one of 2016’s VERY BEST, with such a marvelous cast and such great talent, but all gone waste, because of some elements of the film, tough it is certainly better movie in terms of quality then SHIVAAY, the movie which I reviewed recently. Tough, completely different movies, but I my pick would be AE DIL HAI MUSKHIL, tough I’m not a big fan of romantic films, neither an action film without any sense :P. I had not a GREAT time, with his film, but overall I can’t call it GREAT, not AWFUL as I said earlier, it is just fine, but great to see LOVELY PERFORMANCES.

RATING: 3/5

Yes, go for it cause it’s DIWALI ;).

SHIVAAY (2016) MOVIE REVIEW

SHIVAAY (2016) MOVIE REVIEW

Unlike, many of you there I wasn't so excited for this one, but trailer was promising tough. Bollywood, doing an good looking action, was interesting in a way. But I still had some doubts like, is it just gonna be action and no storyline. And hold on, it came to be true.

First of all, AJAY DEVGAN was good, he directed this film, which was a surprise, but he still did a decent/good job at it. Acting, yes this is not his typical performance, I see a different role from his which was pleasure to see. The rest of the performance were not "GREAT", but yeah normal decent. Tough couple of them in small roles were good.

This is a story of, SHIVAAY, who is a Himalayan mountaineer who is an innocent and yet is capable of transforming into a mean destroyer when he needs to protect his family.

This movie is full of action and blast, very well to see bollywood creating such effects, but then it all gone waste, because of sloppy screenplay and story. This movie, is just like an T.V commercial of THUMBS UP or MOUNTAIN DEW. Sorry, but if you loved/liked the film, fair enough, but as I have to be a little critical, this movie has some flaws.

It has some of the best action sequences ever made in bollywood, but when you are having those, please take care of the story. It had so much potential, but all gone to just an action film, without giving importance to the plot.
But, I gotta give credits to the cinematography, this film is gorgeous looking. Overall, I enjoyed this film, but could have been alot better, it is watchable, LOL, dont get me wrong. The action is enough to pull you up to the end of the film. It certainly could have been a 4+ starter film, but just couldn't and wasn't even close.

Now, wait for my AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL review to know which one to go for. But, yeah I dont like love stories :P. But, yeah if you are looking for an action film, you can go for SHIVAAY. Again, It's action is enough for some people to be hooked up, all the time in the film.

RATING: 2.5/5

No, offence if you liked the film, let me know the feedback. I didn't say I didn't liked, I said I didn't loved it.

Top 10 War Movies Of All Time

TOP 10 WAR MOVIES OF ALL TIME!

WAR  wasn't my favourite genre's, but now when I have so many great WAR films, I can say that it is one of my favourite genre's, without wasting any time here I list top 10 war films of all time, LETS START!

10.    THE LONGEST DAY

This 1962 film is three hours long as well as it is in black and white.  That itself  is reason, for you to ignore it, well atleast for some of you ;), but trust me, this film is brilliant, ASTONISHING, this has some of my favourite actors including JOHN WAYNE & HENRY FONDA, this is a classic, and one of the most underrated WAR films of all time, it deserves 180 minutes of your life.

9. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT

This is the oldest WAR film on the list, but that dosen’t mean anything does it? ;). This films has aged very well, it’s action still is classic. The plot of the movie revolves around, A young soldier faces profound disillusionment in the soul-destroying horror of World War I. This film lets you care about it, which very few WAR films have done. It won many awards including BEST PICTURE at the OSCARS, but besides everything it won my heart, this film really deserved every award it got. It is totally an unforgettable WAR FILM.

8. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN

Sorry, it is that low. This film I loved at the first watch, cause I was too little when I watched it, it became one of my favourite of all time. But, when I grew up, I noticed this movie has some of the best, or infact the BEST, war sequence, but that’s it. I am really sorry, if you were expecting this up a lot high, anyway. This is a GREAT film, it is EPIC . It’s violent in WAR, is so realistic and subtle.

7. FULL METAL JACKET

Now, this is one of my least favourite KUBRICK, that being said it is till GREAT. As no KUBRICK film is bad ;). FULL METAL JACKET, first half is one of most fast paced and best films I have ever seen. It just brilliant, how they showed the camp scene’s. Then come’s the second half, in which movie in my opinion gets a little out of the way. But overall it is a GREAT film. The screenplay of the film, as any other KUBRICK film is just brilliant, no other WAR film on the list has shown the camp scene’s better then FULL METAL JACKET. And who could forget the first long speech in the movie? :P. This is not at all a serious war film, it has a funny tone to it, which is enjoyable to watch.

6. DAS BOOTS

It is the most convincing war film, and certainly the second best foreign WAR film. WOLFGANG PETERSEN’s direction is extraordinary, has went on making some not so good movie like TROY, AIR FORCE ONE, for me this is his only MASTERPIECE. This film gives it’s character a lot of time which is a bonus thing, it lets you feel, more then WAR, it shows the adventure and thriller of it. It is different from any other WAR film on the list!

5.   THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI

David Lean is one of the greatest filmmakers ever lived, and this his masterpiece. Tough I would rank Lawrence Of Arabia Is his best, but this is for sure his second best. This movie came out in 1957, but does it look like that, HELL NO! Lean is always good at these things, his films never age, I mean without so many technologies like today, he created great films with great action sequences. This WAR film, is way ahead of it’s time. This is one of the most realistic and subtle WAR film. You just cannot afford to miss this one, if you haven’t seen it.

4. COME & SEE

This is the most disturbing and unsettling WAR film on the list. It shows the destruction of people like no other film, it creates the feeling for it’s characters so well. It shows the horror of WAR pretty well. It begins with an ambiguous scene, which I wont spoil, but it is brilliance at filmmaking. It gives historical importance, it is one of the major things in the film. It is very, very realistic, It knows the imagery of war, knowing what to show and what not to show. It deals with powerful and complex themes. This film, could have been in the list just because of it’s ending, and Sound Effects in the film were top-notch.

3. PATHS OF GLORY

Some may disagree this being on the list and calling it an ANTI-WAR film, but in my opinion it’s a WAR film. This is master STANLEY KUBRICK’s best war film by far. He created WAR related movies a lot, even his epic COMEDY even had WAR elements. But, PATHS OF GLORY is just brilliant filmmaking. It’s black and white cinematography makes it even more unique. This is one of the most emotional WAR film, and quite possibly the best WAR film about WWI. It’s a timeless classic.

2. THE THIN RED LINE

Terrance Malick’s poetic and beautiful WAR film, this is his arguably MALICK’s best work. You don’t watch this film, you feel it. Now, I have seen many people saying about this film and calling it boring, well EACH TO HIS OWN, but MALICK needs time, his movies need a while to appreciate it to the fullest. The words spoken by every character in the film are special, this film leads you feel for the characters so much. Now, this maybe not so top for some people I know,  but I would suggest watch this again and again and again, I assure you, you would start loving it.

1. APOCALYPSE NOW

Most of you are gonna agree with me on this one, the greatest war film of all time is FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA’s ultimate epic classic, APOCALYPSE NOW. This movie dosen’t have much of the war action, but leaving that it has everything and it has it better then any other war film. This is one of the most powerful films I have ever seen. This movie is perfect weather if you look it from writing, to directing to performances, everything is top-notch in the film. This film has one of the best opening scene’s of all time, and it starts with one of the best songs ever used in films, This is the end, my only friend, the end…. Leaving everything aside, this movie is enjoyable as it is, but you can find much more, it has so many hidden elements and minor details, that Is what makes this film the best.

That wraps up the top 10, here are some HONOURABLE MENTIONS!

 HONOURABLE MENTIONS
·       PATTON
·       THE HURT LOCKER
·       BLACK HAWK DOWN
·       DOWNFALL
·       PLATOON
·       LETTERS FROM TWO JIMA
·       THREE KINGS
·       THE DEER HUNTER
·       SERGANT NEW YORK
·       THE DIRTY DOZEN

NOTE: These films mentioned strictly are WAR films, they show WAR, it is it’s first genre. Other films which you may find missing like SCHINDLERS LIST, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS are WAR related films but their first genre is historical drama, Films like THE GRAND ILLUSION & THE GREAT ESCAPE are also not WAR films, they are prison break films, WAR comes in the second genre. Same goes for some more films like ARMY OF SHAWDOWS, ASHES & DIAMONDS etc. Hence they are not in the list.

DID I MISS ANY?

DON'T FORGET TO GIVE THE FEEDBACK!
